Christoph Girardet

Fountain (2021)

Fountain is an associative montage of sceneries from feature films, industrial films, documentaries and commercials that all present the oil boom and its promises. Starting in the early seventies, after mounting environmental catastrophes, geopolitical conflicts, and oil embargoes, eschatological images full of nihilism increasingly appear within the montage. The clips featured flow like gushing oil from the depths of the earth: both incredibly seductive and poisoning, all the main petromodern materials, topics and tropes make their appearance.

Christoph Girardet (1966, DE) is a video artist and filmmaker. His artistic focus lies in utilizing both accidentally found and extensively researched footage from the history of film. Through techniques of montage, omissions, and repetitions, Christoph Girardet reveals the underlying frameworks and inner workings of the portrayed cinematic realm. Moving beyond material analysis and its commonplace elements, Girardet's creations primarily delve into a melancholic sense of absence, constructing a distinct pictorial world.
