Oil on Canvas II - 2023
What would a proper fine arts exhibition be without oil? The kinetic sculpture Oil on Canvas pumps (black waste) oil over a canvas, constantly flowing over the surface in waves, alternately filling the frame completely and letting it whiten out, only to be smothered with the critical black substance again. Ironically referencing the combination of materials most common in classical art history, the work questions the central significance of petroleum and its derivatives for petromodern culture.
The artist duo Heidungriess from Hamburg/Germany started collaborating in 2011. Alexandra Grieß and Jorel Heid, who have different professional backgrounds, combine their expertise in arts, architecture and design. For several years, they have been actively involved with the rapidly changing and developing urban society and its relations with and effects on nature. The duo works together on site-specific projects and themes, developing interactive, multimedia installations and interventions in public spaces and art galleries.
