Het Brutus Lab is de plek waar kunstenaars kunnen bouwen aan hun carrière en kunnen experimenteren. In samenwerking met de Ron Mandos Youngblood Foundation krijgt elk jaar een kunstenaar de kans om als resident te werken in het Brutus Lab. Tijdens Rotterdam Art Week tonen huidige artist in resident Marcos Kueh en voormalig artist in resident Joseph Thabang Palframan hun werk in het Brutus Lab boven.

Marcos Kueh (Brutus Lab upstairs)


Last year, Marcos Kueh won the Ron Mandos Young Blood Award during Best of Graduates 2022, and now he is creating new work during his residence at BRUTUS.

Marcos Kueh is a textile artist from the Island of Borneo, with a professional background in Graphic Design and Advertising. His love affair with textiles started two years ago in his Academy’s textile workshop, while trying to find a sense of familiarity to grasp onto while studying in the Netherlands. The ancestors of his land encapsulated their dreams, myths and hopes in their textiles. Many of Kueh’s textile works are explorations and speculations of the traditional meaning of the craft in the contemporary context. His practice has motivated him to work and learn about both the traditional weaving techniques back in Borneo and the ‘modern’ industrial weaving mills here in the Netherlands. ⁠⁠⁠

Joseph Thabang Palframan is the winner of the 2021 Ron Mandos Residency Award. He worked in 2021 with the support and guidance from the Young Blood Foundation and BRUTUS. He made a lot of paintings and other work.

Teeth Whitening Lighting is een samenwerkingsverband van Marissa Lee Benedict, Anne Huijnen, Antoon Melissen, Alexandra Phillips en David Rueter, gepresenteerd in het BRUTUS Lab tijdens Rotterdam Art Week 2023.

Deze alomvattende presentatie brengt elementen van onze respectievelijke werkwijzen samen. In goede harmonie? In een ondraaglijke dissonantie? Een waar experiment onder het licht van het licht. We verwelkomen bezoekers van alle leeftijden. Kom meer dan eens.

Anne Huijnen ( NL) works as a visual artist and designer. Huijnen was founder and part of the artist collective Polly's Picture Show from 2011 to 2021. Polly is an umbrella under which multiple collaborations are possible and people and ideas come together. Collaboration is a core value of Huijnen’s practice. In her solo practice, Huijnen makes spatial installations, kinetic objects and sculptural objects. Her installations have been compared to stage sets. By ushering visitors through the stenographies she orchestrates or by using moving objects, her work makes visible social rules and codes of behavior. Her work walks a thin line between chaos, order, chance and control. Huijnen has a photography background and concepts such as the photographer’s gaze remain important in her spatial work. From 2019 to 2022 Huijnen worked as a designer for Marjan van Aubel on projects such as the Solar Roof of the Dutch Pavilion, 2020 Dubai, The Solar Pavillion 2022 Dutch Design Week Eindhoven. In 2018-2019 she was a participant at the Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht. Anne Huijnen is currently based in Amsterdam.

Marissa Lee Benedict (US/NL) and David Rueter (US/NL) are visual artists, writers, and researchers working in collaboration since 2014. Benedict and Rueter’s site-adapted videos, sculptures, and drawings intercept objects and processes that extend beyond one’s peripheral vision. Often working with architectural or infrastructural elements hidden in plain sight, the duo lodges materiality, voice, intimacy, and at times their own bodies, into the heart of abstract and technologically-produced spaces, where such things seem legible only as objects. Benedict and Rueter have exhibited works at the 34th Bienal de São Paulo (BR); The US Pavilion for the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale (IT); The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago (US); Contemporary Art Brussels (BE); The Arts Club of Chicago (US); and The Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago (US), amongst others. They have received major grants from institutions such as the National Endowment for the Arts and the Joan Mitchell Foundation. Their work has been reviewed by publications such as Artforum, Revista, Agenda Magazine, and Hyperallergic. They have collaboratively participated in numerous international artistic residencies including Rupert (2023), the Banff Centre (2016), and the Jan van Eyck Academie (2018).

Art historian Antoon Melissen curates exhibitions and publishes internationally on Dutch art from the 1960s and 1970s in an international context. Publications include monographs on the Dutch artists Armando (2015), Jan Schoonhoven (2016) and Jan Henderikse (2010 and 2018), and catalogue texts for European and American museums and galleries. Since 2010 he participates in European research projects with a focus on artist-driven initiatives and curatorial activities; of processes that shape the ideas and presentation of new art. Collaborations of recent years (exhibitions, publications, lectures) include the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, Guggenheim Collection (Venice), Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York), David Zwirner (New York) and Museum Prinsenhof (Delft). His texts have been published in Dutch, English, German, Italian, Czech, Chinese, French and Papiamentu.

Alexandra Phillips (US/NL) is an American artist currently working in Rotterdam. She spent much of her formative years in North Carolina, attending an art-centered high school program at University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She holds a BFA in painting and a BA in Art History from the Kansas City Art Institute. Her work comments upon our fleeting and insatiable existence with a light touch and a witty sense of humor. Tupperware, plastic and foam wrappings, plaster; she does not transform them, but works with the intrinsic characteristics of these materials and by doing so shows us their unforeseen potential and appeal. Phillips attended Penland School of Crafts (2006), received a Van Lier Fellowship (2013), was resident artist at Atelier Mondial in Basel, Switzerland (2016), and attended Jan van Eyck Academie in 2017. Her work was nominated for the Royal Award for Modern Painting 2021. She has received research support from CBK Rotterdam (2020/2023). She has exhibited at various venues in Rotterdam including Shimmer (2022), Brutus (2022). In 2011 Phillips and artist Jan Henderikse (b.1932 Delft NL) founded Purepropaganda.org Magazine, an absurdist design firm that continues to operate in various forms today. Phillips is represented by Stijn Coppejans Gallery, Antwerp BE.
